Therapeutically induced EEG burst-suppression pattern to treat refractory status epilepticus—what is the evidence?

چکیده

Abstract Current guidelines advocate to treat refractory status epilepticus (RSE) with continuously administered anesthetics induce an artificial coma if first- and second-line antiseizure drugs have failed stop seizure activity. A common surrogate for monitoring the depth of is appearance a burst-suppression pattern (BS) in EEG. This review summarizes current knowledge on origin neurophysiology BS phenomenon as well evidence from literature presumed benefit therapy adult patients RSE.

Early ketamine to treat refractory status epilepticus.

BACKGROUND Management of refractory status epilepticus (SE) involves administration of intravenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA(A)) receptor agonists, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or propofol. Animal models suggest that reductions in synaptic GABA(A) receptors may cause these drugs to become less effective as the duration of SE increases. This may explain the large doses that are commonl...

Stimulus-sensitive burst-spiking in burst-suppression in children: implications for management of refractory status epilepticus.

Status epilepticus refractory to sequential trials of multiple medication is a rare but significant problem in children. We describe stimulus sensitivity arising during the treatment of convulsive status epilepticus in children (stimulus-sensitive burst-spiking in burst-suppression). We reviewed retrospectively clinical and EEG features in six children (three months to ten years), with status e...

Prognostic value of non-reactive burst suppression EEG pattern associated to early neonatal seizures.

UNLABELLED Seizures are the most frequent neurological event in newborns and clinical data suggest that etiology is the dominant factor in long term outcome. However, there are consistent background EEG abnormalities associated to neonatal seizures that are usually related to unfavorable outcome as the burst-suppression pattern. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to correlate clinical ...

Burst suppression probability algorithms: state-space methods for tracking EEG burst suppression.

OBJECTIVE Burst suppression is an electroencephalogram pattern in which bursts of electrical activity alternate with an isoelectric state. This pattern is commonly seen in states of severely reduced brain activity such as profound general anesthesia, anoxic brain injuries, hypothermia and certain developmental disorders. Devising accurate, reliable ways to quantify burst suppression is an impor...

Periodic eye opening and swallowing movements associated with post-anoxic burst-suppression EEG pattern.

We report a video-electroencephalogram study of a 50-year-old woman who developed a clinical picture consisting of stereotyped periodic eye opening followed by eye closing, with or without swallowing movements, after a prolonged cardiopulmonary arrest. These movements were associated with a burst-suppression pattern on the electroencephalogram. [Published with video sequences].
